Sensor blinds-time switches

As part of your building automation, should your blinds react independently to wind speeds or brightness? Then you need wind sensors, brightness sensors or multi-sensors, which determine the required measured values. We would like to explain the functional principle of the most common devices to you below.

Sensors for controlling blinds are measured value transmitters for the wind-dependent, light-dependent and time-dependent control of sun protection products. The use of these devices makes the operation of your sun protection systems and shading systems particularly easy and convenient. The sensors react automatically to wind, the position of the sun, rain or other environmental influences and forward the measured values in the form of electrical signals. As specialists for smart home installations, we offer you only high-quality components for your systems in the eibabo® technology store and help you to select the right products.

What is a wind sensor?

A wind sensor is also known as an anemometer. It is a device for measuring the speed of movement of gases, as well as air in closed systems. In meteorology, the device is used to measure wind speed. Depending on the functional principle, a distinction is made between the following types of anemometers:

  • mechanical wind sensors
  • thermal wind sensors
  • acoustic wind sensors

TIP

Install a wind sensor as high as possible and free-standing, preferably on a mast at a height of about 10 meters. Dormer windows, house walls or trees influence the measured values and falsify the actual conditions.

The mechanical wind sensor

In a mechanical wind sensor, the movement of gas or air causes a windmill or impeller to rotate. This sensitive element is movably mounted on an axis of the device connected to the measuring device. The wind causes the wind wheel to rotate around its own axis and the measuring mechanism records the number of revolutions per unit of time. From this, the speed of the wind is calculated. The wind sensor forwards the information to the connected display devices or command devices. This type of wind sensor has been around for a long time and is still widely used today. The disadvantage of these devices lies in the moving parts. These are subject to a certain amount of wear and tear and can be damaged by objects flying around. As a result, failures or faulty measurement data can occur suddenly or slowly and unnoticed.

The thermal wind sensor

The functional principle of thermal anemometers is based on measuring the temperature decrease of a heated body (usually a glowing wire) through gas movement. This means that there are highly sensitive sensors in a probe that measure the temperature and air speed. The sensors work on the principle of convection and measure the removal of heat from a heated surface by a moving medium. Applications are in construction, manufacturing, meteorological stations, underground utilities, and in rooms with industrial air conditioning and ventilation systems.

The acoustic wind sensor

Ultrasonic anemometers are based on the change in the speed of sound in gases or air depending on the speed and direction of the wind. The speed of sound against the wind direction is lower than in still air. With the wind, the speed is higher. An acoustic wind sensor evaluates these speed differences and forwards the values to downstream devices.

What other sensors can blinds be controlled with?

brightness sensors

Light sensors work with photodetectors that record the amount of daylight at the current time. According to the preset programming, the device responds with the output of an electrical signal. As a rule, this is used to regulate the illuminance inside buildings. However, light sensors also work together with roller shutters, curtains or blinds. When the sun shines, the light sensor signals that the windows should be shaded.

precipitation sensors

Precipitation sensors are devices that record the amount of precipitation over a period of time. Rain, hail, snow and mixed precipitation are measured. Depending on the model, the devices are able to interact with actuators and actuators via a wired and/or wireless connection. This ensures an appropriate and immediate response to changing weather conditions. Rain gauges can be used even in difficult weather conditions, as they are designed to provide accurate readings even in strong winds and other unfavorable factors.

multisensors

Multisensors are also offered as environmental sensors, multiple sensors or weather stations. These are wired or radio-capable sensors that record various weather data and thus enable the automatic control of building services. The sensors are equipped with various measurement functions, such as temperature, rain, wind speed, humidity, position of the sun, sun height and/or illuminance.

Here you save

Multisensors provide a variety of different data and enable automation based on different measured values. The devices are usually less expensive than the sum of the corresponding individual sensors.

A clock is also often integrated. Then automatisms can be regulated not only on the basis of the environmental conditions, but also according to the lapse of time. The measured data serve as the basis for triggering automatic processes and are transmitted to the registered recipients for this purpose. Among other things, blinds can be automatically moved to the sun protection position when the sun is shining brightly. Using additional actuators, lights can also be switched on and off automatically at certain brightness values or shading can be automatically retracted in the event of wind or rain.
